POSITION TITLE:
Reading Pals Tutor (2 positions are available)
LOCATION:
Red Deer Public Library, Dawe Branch
TIME COMMITMENT: 32 hours/ week
Monday – Thursday
July 3– August 18, 2017
PURPOSE/GOALS:
To provide free, direct help to elementary children (grades 1-6) who are experiencing reading and/or writing difficulties in a fun and non-threatening environment through specially developed programs and activities.
DUTIES/
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Working with Coordinator, develop and deliver literacy-based programs for elementary age children based upon individual needs.
- Works on one-on-one capacity with students in a variety of activities to assist in development of skills in reading and writing
- Develop resources and programs to improve literacy, and encourage the development of self-esteem
- Maintain students records- ongoing assessment of participant skills
- Assist in preparation of take home resources for use by parents with their children at home
- Participate in ongoing and final evaluation of program activities
SKILLS/ QUALIFICATIONS:
• Enjoys working with children.
• Sensitive to the needs of students (including ESL learners) struggling with reading and/or writing.
• Outgoing, friendly, and enthusiastic.
• Strong English language skills (spelling, grammar, pronunciation)
• Must be willing to provide a current Criminal Records Check.
• Post-secondary student
ORIENTATION/ TRAINING:
Orientation and training provided by the Manager, Dawe Branch and Reading Pals Coordinator before the start of the program for two days and daily during the program.
