The Dartmouth Heritage Museum Society’s mandate is to collect & preserve, and make accessible the cultural material of Dartmouth and vicinity. Currently we operate 2 different historic houses from 2 different time periods (1780 & 1867) and manage a large warehouse of artifacts (estimated to be over 45,000). The DHMS is a not-for profit Society and requires Heritage Interpreters to work at the sites.

Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Heritage Interpreter & Museum Assistant welcomes visitors to the sites and conducts interpretive tours in English and French of the museum. The Heritage Interpreter is responsible for visitor reception including answering public inquiries; presenting educational programs including preparing and facilitating workshops; assisting in special event preparation and execution; marketing the museum programs, bookings and collecting fees; carrying on historical research, and partaking in collection management, site inventory and data entry. Some of the other duties include light housekeeping, wearing and maintaining period costumes, cash handling and reconciliation, keeping visitor statistics, managing gift shop operations, gardening, and maintaining the safety and security of visitors, staff and the DHM facility.

Candidate Profile
A university or college student (general arts program, history, museum studies, theatre, costume studies, film studies), who has excellent communication and organizational skills, computer skills (Windows, MS Office, Outlook and internet), with a cheerful personality, good work ethics and a sense of humour. Candidate should be outgoing, knowledgeable about local history and enjoy working with people (especially children) and must be registered in the Young Canada Works Program.


Required Qualifications
o Applicant must have been a full time student during the last academic year returning to full time study in the fall 2016
o Be registered as a candidate with Young Canada Works www.youngcanadaworks.ca/
o Interest in working in a museum setting. Past experience considered an asset.
o Interest in history, tourism, and/or education and working in a cultural setting;
o Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written;
o Proven customer service skills and enjoys working with the public;
o Working knowledge of retail shop procedures
o Willingness and ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
o Language of work: English. Second language an asset
o Must be able to work weekends and some evenings as required.

Rate: $11.50/ hour. 35 hours/week
