Position Overview: Reporting to the Curator of Contemporary Art, the Curatorial Assistant will assist with research, development and coordination of a selected artist residency and exhibitions in conjunction with Canada 150 events, ancillary programming, and publications. The Curatorial Assistant will adhere to high standards of excellence assisting the Curator of Contemporary Art with research and administrative tasks to ensure that programs and related projects are delivered as conceived, on time and on budget.

The Agnes Etherington Art Centre is a research‐intensive art museum that serves as an active educational resource at Queen’s University and as a public gallery for the Kingston region and beyond. By collecting and preserving works of art, exhibiting and interpreting visual culture, and fostering and disseminating research, the Agnes illuminates the great artistic traditions of the past and the innovations of the present. Our work is driven by the belief that encounters with original works of art contribute to understanding the world and ourselves.



Duties:
• Assistance with research, development and coordination of selected artist residency and exhibitions, ancillary programming including but not limited to: lectures, film screenings, artist workshops, etc.
• Coordinates logistical arrangements for exhibitions, programs, and publications.
• Researches and writes relevant grants.
• Manages relationships, contracts and deliverables determined by the artistic programs plan.
• Works with Curator of Contemporary Art on the multi-purposing of content across the education and public program functions, ensuring integration of public engagement activities.
• Implements program processes as required, and special programming for Canada 150 events.
• Liaises with community and academic partners in planning artist residency.
• Facilitates workshops and lectures as required.
• Drafts exhibition educational and didactic content as required.
• Interprets exhibition content in an engaging, accessible and provocative way.
• Assists with the development, integration and coordination of all aspects of educational programming, ensuring alignment with the Ontario elementary & secondary curriculum.
• Ensures the gallery develops and maintains strong and productive relationships with community visual arts organizations and artists.
• Ensures the gallery develops and maintains strong and productive relationships with community partners, media, and gallery supporters.

Qualifications:
• Minimum Formal Education: Master’s degree in Visual Studies, Cultural Studies, Curatorial Practice, Art History, or other related areas.
• One year recent experience (within past two years) in Curatorial work in a public art institutional context.
• An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
• Proven awareness and understanding of the current provincial and national context of contemporary and historical art, issues, production and practices.
• Proven awareness of interdisciplinary and/or new media based contemporary art practices as well as a solid knowledge of Canadian Art History.
• Proven expertise in conceiving and programming contemporary and historical art projects and exhibitions.
• Demonstrated project management skills.
• Demonstrated research and writing skills.
• Knowledge of current art educational principles and practices.
• Possesses excellent interpersonal skills, superior analytical, multi-tasking, organizational, customer service and teamwork skills.
• Ability to develop strong relationships in community and across relevant sectors.
• High level command of Microsoft office suite. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite is an asset.
