We are looking for tour guides to take visitors on guided tours of a 350 ft. historical Titanic-era passenger ship used to take passengers to western Canada, including for the settlement of Saskatchewan and Alberta when they become provinces in 1905. The S.S. Keewatin is operated by the Friends of Keewatin, a volunteer organization. The tours are scripted and time specific. Visitors include both individuals travelling to the ship on their own and groups, including groups from American cruise ships docking in Midland.

French language ability is not required, but preference will be given to candidates who speak French. Women, visible minorities and Aboriginal peoples are encouraged to apply.

We are looking for applicants who have excellent oral communication and reading skills, work well with others, and have an interest in Canadian history.

During quieter periods, tour guides will have an opportunity to learn more about the ship and its history and to assist in the restoration of artifacts.

Successful candidates will be both university and high school students, with the start of employment for each dependent on the completion of the school year and completion of employment being Labour Day weekend. Tour guides will work five days a week, generally including weekends, which are the busiest period for individual visitors.

The S.S. Keewatin is not accessible by public transit, but it can be easily accessed from the Tay Shore Trail, a paved regional bike path, which connects to the Midland Rotary Waterfront Trail and other bike paths in Simcoe County. Other historical attractions in the local area are Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, the first European settlement in Ontario, the former British military base at Discovery Harbour, and Huronia Museum in Midland, which features a replica of a “pre-contact” Huron/Ouendat village.

The deadline for applications is April 21, 2017 for university students and June 10, 2017 for high school students.
