The Diefenbunker, Canada’s Cold War Museum, is a not-for-profit, community museum in rural Ottawa. Originally built in 1961 to house key members on Canada’s government and military in the event of a nuclear attack on Ottawa, the Diefenbunker has been a museum since 1998.
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Operations Manager, you contribute to the mandate of the Museum by helping to operate the Museum and working on a collections and digitization project. The Collections Assistant will migrate collections data from a Microsoft Access database into the Museum’s new Minisis software. This will include retrieving the artefact or archival material from its location, analysing artefacts, entering a description, measurements, condition, and location, as well as digitizing and photographing artefacts for online accessibility.
Central Responsibilities
- Become familiar with the Diefenbunker's collection, the location of objects, the location of records, and how they are currently stored
- Become familiar and, with time, proficient with Minisis, the Diefenbunker's collections management software
- Migrate data from a Microsoft Access database into the Minisis software
- Provide descriptions, measurements, condition reports, and locations for artefact records
- Properly photograph artefacts and digitize archival materials for artefact records
- Provide information regarding locations and conditions to those seeking artefacts or records from the collection
- Conduct an artefact research project, using the Diefenbunker's collection and archives
- Conduct tours of the facility with a specialized focus on the artefacts and collection
- Other duties as needed
Key requirements:
- Current university or college student in a related field (museology, archaeology, history, or comparable studies)
- Strong communication skills and excellent presentation skills
- Adaptability, innovation, as well as proven ability to work in a team environment
- Experience in proper artefact handling
- Experience in artefact, archival, and collections research
- Familiarity with photographic and digitization equipment
- Familiarity with collections management software
- Familiarity with computers and Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Assets:
- Bilingual, able to conduct tours in both official languages
- Understanding of database systems and organization
- Understanding of the Cold War and Canadian history
