Working with the Curator, Cultural Services Representative, Historical Society volunteers, and other summer staff, the Historical Interpreter will be responsible for:

-Becoming familiar with the history of the area and the buildings located at the Georgina Pioneer Village & Archives.

-Conducting selective research into 19th-century dress, furnishings, architecture, hobbies and occupations.

-Creation and delivery of hands-on activities for adult and child visitors based on the early settlement theme.

-Presenting basic demonstrations and activities to the public that depict the jobs, chores, and pastimes performed by early settlers.

-Answering questions from the public and serving as the front-line of visitor services delivery.

-Creating basic “how-to” guides that explain the process of performing various historic demonstrations for the public.

-Compiling basic qualitative data on visitors’ experiences and making recommendations on how best to improve that experience.

-Monitoring gift shop inventory, placing gift shop orders, and processing gift shop sales.

-Performing basic preventive conservation care for various artefacts as needed and ensuring that visitors demonstrate respect for the Village’s collections and buildings.

-Assist other staff with Maintenance and Security measures throughout the grounds.

-Occasionally updating collections management records using Filemaker Pro, a computer database management program, contributing to the artefact inventory process, and assisting with basic archival research inquiries when needed.

As an ideal candidate, you have a minimum of one year university or college in an appropriate field (e.g., museum studies, history, conservation, anthropology, education) and possess demonstrated organizational, writing and research skills. Familiarity with a museum, heritage, cultural, or not-for-profit organization, is an asset, as is the ability to work both independently and in a team environment. A valid driver's licence or access to transportation is required. Candidates must be available to work weekends.

Additional requirements: All candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, and be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment. Candidates must also plan to return to full-time post-secondary education upon the completion of your work term.
