Due to generative AI and the changing post-university job market, students need new digital literacy and research skills. The Digital Literacy and Research Intern will help to develop and deliver support for students to learn the modern digital literacy and research skills they need in a constantly changing information environment.
The Intern will report to the Associate University Librarian (AUL), Engagement and Learning and will work with a team of staff and librarians to support students’ exploration and acquisition of modern digital literacy and research skills.
Working closely with the AUL and other colleagues, the Intern’s primary duties will be to contribute to projects including:
-Expand Thesis Writers’ Intensive, an existing, high-impact graduate research and writing intensive program shared between the Libraries and the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
-Launch a new Undergraduate Research Intensive, with a focus on experiential learning to build digital research skills.
-Build high-quality, open, accessible, self-paced learning materials (such as online guides and tutorials) that teach digital research skills to UVic students and the general community.
-Help to explore and potentially implement a badging or micro-credentialing system for users progressing through self-guided digital literacy and research learning materials and workshops.
-Help to promote and assess UVic Libraries’ digital literacy and research skills supports and pathways.
Specific or additional duties may be assigned based on the Intern’s specific interests, skills, and experiences.
Core responsibilities include proactively staying informed of the rapidly changing modern information environment in the context of generative AI and the changing job post-university job market; providing thoughtful and impactful input into discussions and decision processes; working effectively both in collaboration with others and independently as appropriate; and communicating effectively with others to build and maintain strong working relationships.
The Intern will have opportunities to provide input into and help shape service offerings and projects, bringing fresh perspectives on engaging students with emerging digital technologies while promoting digital equity and responsible innovation.
Under the supervision of the AUL and in collaboration with colleagues, the successful candidate will provide guidance and support for learners in their development of modern digital literacy and research skills. Tasks include, but are not limited to:
-Collaborate on the design, development, and co-facilitation of workshops, intensives, and cohort-based learning experiences focused on digital research skills and generative AI literacy for both graduate and undergraduate students.
-Under the direction of librarians and staff, produce open educational resources including online guides, tutorials, and self-paced learning materials that support the development of digital information literacy and research skills in the context of generative AI.
-Provide direct event and program support to facilitate the delivery of the Thesis Writers' Intensive (Dec 2026) and the Undergraduate Research Intensive (Fall 2026 – Spring 2027).
-Work closely with librarians, faculty members, staff, and campus partners to identify areas of need for digital literacy and research skills support.
-Under the direction of librarians and staff, co-develop and co-implement promotional strategies, including social media content, website updates, email campaigns, and presentations to academic departments.
-In collaboration with librarians and staff, research and potentially help to implement an effective pilot badging or micro-credentialing framework for self-guided digital literacy and research skill learning pathways.
-Under the direction of librarians and staff, gather feedback from program participants, track engagement metrics, and contribute to ongoing program improvement and strategic planning.
In order to be successful, the candidate should:
-be a recent graduate from a Canadian university with a background in education, design, computer science, library & information science, business, or another related discipline.
-have demonstrated interest in and experience with generative AI tools
-demonstrate understanding of ethical considerations related to generative AI, diverse user populations, and digital equity
-demonstrate interest in or understanding of the changing Canadian post-university job market
-have experience creating instructional content or learning materials, particularly for technical or digital topics
-be passionate about helping others to learn, particularly about complex technology-related topics
-have experience with digital content creation and online learning platforms
-be able to work both collaboratively and independently
-have strong written and verbal communication skills in English
-be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible)
-be legally entitled to work in Canada
-be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
