Art City programming takes the form of art workshops & events that are free and open to all. Most participants could not afford/access professional art experiences without the opportunities we provide. A majority of participants are local Indigenous & newcomer youth and their family members. Art City is a microcosm of an ideal world, welcoming people of all ages, backgrounds & abilities together in a spirit of creativity and collaboration.
In a typical year Art City brings contemporary art concepts to a wide audience:
• Number of Workshops: 1,018
• Number of Programming Hours: 3,400
• Number of Individuals Served: 5,697
• Number of Participant Visits: 15,243
Working closely with the management team, the Communication Coordinator will gain a wide array of professional skills transferrable across many types of organizations—from promoting events, documenting workshops, distilling highlights for funding reports, and sharing impact to donors.
The day-to-day tasks of this job will include graphic design, digital communications, documentation and archiving photos/videos, and hands-on project support. The eight-month timeframe will include several special events and projects such as our annual Fundraiser (attendance > 1,000), Parade (large-scale free community event), Summer Day Camps (free for local children and youth) & Talent Show, and Halloween Festival (free community-wide party) and more.
The ideal candidate should have an interest in pursuing a career in communications and/or arts administration. Graduates with a degree or diploma in communications and marketing may be most interested in the opportunity.
Brief Job Description:
Communications and Promotions:
• Develop and implement promotional schedule (for special events and daily programming)
• Social media (Facebook & Instagram) posts and communications
• Format and distribute email promotions
• Graphic design of promotional materials (including posters, social media posts, programming reports, etc.)
• Website maintenance
• Support website redesign with Art City management and an external design team
Documentation of Program Activities:
• Photographic and video documentation of programming (in-house programming, off-site workshops, special events)
• Photo archive organization and editing
• Assist with collecting support materials for grant applications & reports
• Select donor relations (tax receipts, thank-you letters & artworks, etc.)
• Organize and edit photo archive
Helpful Qualities:
• Adobe Suite proficiency
• Experience with the Google Suite of products
• Literacy in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc.)
• Knowledge of the Meta Business Suite (Instagram, Facebook etc.)
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to work well in a team
• Able to adapt to shifting priorities
• Knowledge of Art City and its programs
• An understanding of the impacts of poverty, post-colonization, intergenerational trauma, and other challenges experienced by community members
No specific degree or diploma is required but to be eligible under the granting requirement the candidate must be a recent college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate). The candidate must also be:
• a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
• legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number); and
• between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment.
Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.
