Job Summary:
As a member of the Education Team, the Cultural and Heritage Interpreter will participate in school, youth, and public program delivery with a special emphasis on Manitoba’s cultural history. This Interpreter will play a unique role in the building of FortWhyte Alive’s heritage products and services. The position entails the utilization of leadership, public relations, and communication skills and the acquisition and application of specific environment-related knowledge in a public education role.

Principal tasks:
Program Delivery
- Shadow different interpreters to learn delivery techniques, styles, and program content
- Interpret for school/youth and public groups
- Coordinate school programs, including assembling program supplies, preparing schedules, and assisting volunteer interpreters
- Participate in seasonal training programs for volunteer and staff interpreters
- Mentor volunteer interpreters
- Assist in the care and maintenance of program materials, indoor exhibits, as well as outdoor tipis and sod house

Research and Writing
- Revise year-round school programs
- Research and recommend activities and materials to enhance science and cultural programming
- Develop new outdoor learning resources for educational use
- Assist in processing program evaluations and statistics

Other duties as assigned

Basic Hiring Criteria:
- University/college student working towards a degree/diploma in education, recreation, science or tourism
- Available to work occasional evenings and weekends in June, and occasional evening and rotating weekend shifts in July and August
- Proficiency using MS Office
- Proven experience working with children/youth (a child abuse registry check and criminal records check are required before the position begins)
- Knowledge of Manitoba’s cultural history
- Knowledge of Indigenous languages and culture is an asset
- Certification in First Aid and CPR an asset

A student may be eligible for employment if they:
-are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
-are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
-are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
-are a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.
Note: Priority will be given to students who have not previously participated in the YCWHO employment program.
