The St. Andrews Heritage Center is located inside the St. Andrews Rectory; a Parks Canada National Historic site at 374 River Road, St. Andrews, MB. The St. Andrews Heritage committee has been running a museum in the building since 2013. The purpose of the museum is to showcase the history of the early Red River Settlers and the heritage of the St. Andrews community through fun, modern and interactive exhibits, displays, programs, and events.
The tasks of the Museum Communication Coordinator position will be to provide customer service communications for all museum offerings and interactions with visitors. The goal of this project is to improve the communication system of the museum and therefore improve the overall customer service experience.
The Museum Communication Coordinator position will be responsible for the day-to-day interaction with the general public through in-person communications, by email, phone, and social media. The position will be responsible for organizing museum group tours, senior tours, school field trips, summer camp day trips, traveling trunk program, and historic bike tours. The position will also assist other staff in program and event planning as it relates to registrations and communications, as well as managing the gift shop inventory, sales, and donation program.
The student will work with other summer staff, the volunteer heritage committee members, Recreation Department employees and local historians to learn about the Rectory, the Red River Settlement and the history of the RM of St. Andrews. The student will become familiar with the programs, events and activities planned for the museum and work with the other employees to promote those through different communication outlets. This position will handle the majority of phone, email and in-person communications with visitors and use social media to promote the museum.
The goal of this project is to provide visitors with exceptional customer service and increase communications that will in turn provide additional opportunities for visitors to come visit the museum. After a tour of the museum, visitors may not come back for another tour, but they may come back for our programs and events and possibly book a group tour or a bike tour.
Description of main tasks includes:
1. Customer Service - Communications through email, phone and in person, as well as social media platforms and website. Update social media as required daily and work with local media outlets (newspapers, etc.) to get additional exposure for the museum. This service would relate to tasks listed below.
a. Program Planning – Communication for online registrations of already established and successful programs, events, and activities, as well as new ones.
b. Events – Communications for promoting new events, as well as renting the building and site for family, business, corporate and group functions. Working to communicate all the possible availabilities and experiences of the museum. Communicate with local businesses to create niche events to attract new tourists and interest from locals.
c. Special Projects – Work as a Liaison for the “Art and Garden Tour” event presented by Red River North Tourism and other new events planned for the summer.
d. Statistics and Surveys – Collect evaluation data from program and event participants to determine what visitors enjoyed and what could be changed. Keep track of participation numbers for all, as well as daily visitors and any other communications we receive through telephone calls, emails, or social media.
St. Andrews Rectory Museum Hours:
Open 5-days a week from Jan-May. Open 6-days a week from June 2 – Aug 28; June hours daily from 10 am–5 pm, Closed Mondays; July/August hours daily from 10 am–8 pm, Weekends Fri-Sun from 10 am–5 pm, Closed Mondays
Candidate Profile:
This position will appeal to university or college students interested in history or a similar field of work (i.e., event planning, education, communications, and tourism). Knowledge of marketing, advertising, sales or communications would be an asset; including telephone and computer skills, however, being outgoing and enjoying interaction with people are more valuable assets to these positions.
Qualifications:
The candidate applying for this position should be a great communicator and able to work on their own. Previous museum experience would be an asset, but not required as we are willing to train the right candidate. Those who have graduated with experience in history, communication, marketing, education, or tourism should find this position very appealing and interesting.
Candidates should be well versed and able to use a computer or the ability to learn (Word, Excel, Publisher, Word Press) and be able to use social media as a communication tool (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.). Being able to work in a small community atmosphere, as part of a team with others is required. There is no public transportation to this site, so transportation to the site is required.
A student may be eligible for employment if they:
-are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
-are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
-are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
-are a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.
