JOB DESCRIPTION – Heritage Intern

Reports to: Manager of Planning and Development
Department: Planning and Development

Job profile:
The Town of Banff is seeking a highly motivated, clever and gifted recent graduate to support Planning and Development Department with heritage planning projects over the summer of 2017. As a member of our team, the Heritage Canada Intern will work to preserve built heritage in Banff while respecting the requirements of Federal and Provincial Legislation as well as the direction provided in the Banff Heritage Resource Policy.

Specific responsibilities include; completion of Heritage Site Assessments, drafting and presenting Statements of Significance to the community, and as well as the production and development of research to support greater understanding of local cultural and built heritage within the Banff townsite.

The successful candidate will apply their understanding of land use planning, architectural history, and community engagement to these assignments over a defined 18 week period. To apply, you must enjoy design thinking and critical investigations of social, cultural and environmental issues as they relate to the preservation of local heritage.

Job Duties:

• Prepare research on built and cultural heritage within the townsite,
• Update the Banff Heritage Inventory to reflect priority areas, Council direction and historical thematic framework,
• Audit the existing Municipal Heritage Inventory Map,
• Conduct ‘windshield surveys’ following the standards for Municipal Inventory provided by Alberta Culture and Town of Banff,
• Present prepared Statements of Significance to the Banff Heritage Corporation for review and input,
• Undertake “field research” including site visits to archives, outreach with property owners, and communication with Parks Canada to collect information, pictures and stories associated with Banff’s built heritage,
• Research and Review best practices for heritage conservation,
• Attendance/ participation at meetings including the Banff Heritage Corporation, Municipal Council and Municipal Planning Commission as required,
• Preparation of heritage planning studies and reports,
• Work with communications department and web development team to publish project updates to the community including the final summaries for the Banff Landmarks and Legends Series,

Qualifications / Education:

• Post-secondary graduate from a recognized Urban Planning, Architecture or Environmental Studies program.
• Strong knowledge and/or previous experience in research, urban design, and assessments of built and cultural heritage.
• Intermediate knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications. Knowledge of Microsoft Word is essential.
• Exceptional organizational skills.
• Ability to communicate and engage with a wide variety of audiences and stakeholders including the capacity to present ideas, produce written summaries and communicate ideas clearly.
• Capacity to multi-task and work in a fast-paced work environment with frequent interruptions and open dialogue.
• You must have an interest in a wide variety of heritage planning issues with a particular understanding of architectural history, urban design, communications and public engagement.

Internship Eligibility Criteria:
• be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada. NOTE: Non-Canadian students or graduates holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
• be legally entitled to work in Canada.
• be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
• have finished the school term at the start of employment.
• meet the specific eligibility criteria of the program to which you apply.
• be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory.
• be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.
• Not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of flexible work program.

Remuneration: $ 18.00 – 21.00 (hourly). The applicant will also quality for Town of Banff Employee Housing provided at below market rate for the duration of their internship with the Town of Banff subject to availability.
