Museum Program Interpreter - $16.50-$18.50/hr DOQ

The tasks of the MPI will be to offer established and successful programs, events and activities, as well as creating new ones as required. The goal of this project is to create and establish unique programs and events at the Museum and bring in tourists from outside the region.

The students will work with the volunteer heritage committee members, Recreation Department employees and local historians to learn about the Rectory, the Red River Settlement and the history of the RM of St. Andrews. The students will become familiar with the programs, events and activities coordinated through the Heritage Centre over the last couple of years and use the most successful programs and events to help build new programs for the summer months.

The goal is to provide the community with additional opportunities to come visit the museum and to be able to open the doors for community events and activities sponsored by the Heritage Centre or also through partnerships in the community such as Red River North Tourism, Interlake Tourism Association, the Regional Heritage Group, the Selkirk Biz or local businesses.

The goal is to have the museum open longer hours with more programs and events planned for visitors, so after a tour of the museum, visitors may not come back for another tour, but they will come back for our programs and events and possibly book a group tour.

Description of main tasks includes:
1. Program Planning – Offer established and successful programs, events and activities, as well as create new ones as required. Update and finalize the summer programs and everything required to successfully host Age-Friendly initiatives such as Family Nights, Kids Activity Days, Senior Days, Porch Performances, Group tours, School and Summer camp field trips, Special events such as BBQs, bands, markets and fundraisers.
2. Events – Planning and promoting new events, as well as renting the building and site for family, business, corporate and group functions. Being able to create an experience for visitors and provide a unique venue to do it at. Work with local businesses to create niche events to attract new tourists and interest from locals.
3. Special Projects – Work as a Liaison for the “Art and Garden Tour” event presented by Red River North Tourism and other new events planned for the summer.
4. Communications – Update social media as required daily to promote programs and events and work with local media outlets (newspapers, etc.) to get additional exposure for the museum.
5. Statistics and Surveys – Collect evaluation data from program and event participants to determine what they enjoyed and what could be changed. Keep track of participation numbers for all, as well as daily visitors and any other communications we receive through telephone calls, emails or social media.

Additional tasks may include:
• Working with the Historic Interpreters, site supervisors and lead volunteers
• Opening and/or closing the museum on a rotating basis, general housekeeping and keeping the grounds clean and tidy
• Cleaning, assembling & displaying artefacts as required for viewing (lighting, labeling, directing foot traffic)
• Greeting all visitors in person and answering phones when required
• Guiding visitors through the museum and explaining the history of Red River Settlement
• Performing vignettes from prepared scripts during school, summer camp, and group tours
• Creating historical activities and crafts for children's programs, school tours, group tours, family nights and special events
• Visiting other historic sites or locations in the Interlake to promote the St. Andrews Rectory, its historic significance in the community and its programs, events and tours offered
• Completing accurate documentation for daily visitor statistics and gift shop sales
• Performing other duties as required (yard maintenance, gardening, trash, recycling, composting)

St. Andrews Rectory Museum Hours:
Open 5-days a week from Jan-May. Open 6-days a week from June-Aug. June hours daily are from 10 am–5 pm, Closed Mondays. July/August hours daily are from 10 am–8 pm, Weekends Fri-Sun from 10 am–5 pm, Closed Mondays.

Candidate Profile:
These positions will appeal to university or college students interested in history or a similar field of work (i.e., event planning, education, communications, and tourism). Knowledge of marketing, advertising, sales or communications would be an asset; including telephone and computer skills, however, being outgoing and enjoying interaction with people are more valuable assets to these positions.

Qualifications:
The candidate applying for this position should be a great communicator and able to work on their own. Previous museum experience would be an asset, but not required as we are willing to train the right candidate. Those who have graduated with experience in history, communication, marketing, education, or tourism should find this position very appealing and interesting.

Candidates should be well versed and able to use a computer or the ability to learn (Word, Excel, Canva) and be able to use social media as a communication tool (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.). Being able to work in a small community atmosphere, as part of a team with others is required. There is no public transportation to this site, so transportation to the site is required.

A student may be eligible for employment if they:
-are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
-are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
-are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
-are a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.
