The Manitoba Agricultural Museum is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic student for the position of Collections and Interpretation Assistant. This is a seasonal, full-time summer position running from early May to the end of August 2026.
The successful candidate will report to the Collections & Programming Manager and play a key role in supporting museum exhibitions, collections management, and public programming. Working as part of a small, collaborative team, the student will gain hands-on experience in curatorial practices, artifact care, exhibition preparation, and interpretive delivery, while developing professional skills in research, interpretation, and heritage engagement within a rural museum setting.
Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 30 at the start of employment and returning to school in Fall 2026.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist with artifact handling, documentation, and preventive conservation under supervision
• Design and produce a mini-exhibit to be displayed in the museum’s temporary exhibition gallery.
• Support collection management and data entry using CatalogIt software system
• Help prepare, install, and de-install exhibitions, including drafting labels and interpretive text
• Conduct artifact-based research to support exhibitions, educational programs, and special events
• Deliver school programs, guided tours, and demonstrations to diverse audiences
• Apply professional museum standards and practices, and adapt to evolving museum needs
• Contribute to inclusive, engaging visitor experiences during programming and festival events
About the Manitoba Agricultural Museum
The Manitoba Agricultural Museum is a 320-acre heritage park located near Austin, Manitoba, dedicated to preserving and sharing Manitoba’s agricultural and rural heritage. Founded in 1953, the museum welcomes more than 17,000 visitors annually.
The museum is home to Canada’s largest collection of operating vintage agricultural equipment and a 26-building heritage village showcasing historic homes, businesses, and community life. It is a Manitoba Star Attraction and one of seven Manitoba Signature Museums, offering visitors hands-on history and engaging programming.
Required Qualifications
• Must be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
• Must be returning to school in Fall 2026
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to multitask, work independently, and collaborate within a team
• Interest in history, museums, agriculture, or tourism is an asset
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence required, as the museum is not accessible by public transportation

The position is based near Austin, Manitoba, a welcoming rural community in south-central Manitoba. The region is known for its prairie landscapes, agricultural roots, and friendly small-town atmosphere. Nearby attractions include heritage sites, outdoor recreation, and community events throughout the summer.
