The UAM is one of Canada’s largest academic and research museum collections, with millions of objects and specimens in both the Natural Sciences and Humanities. Our collections are actively used for teaching, research, and community engagement. These collections and activities are managed in our current collections management system, Mimsy XG, which is the cornerstone to our online collections access. Selecting and migrating to a new collections management system is fundamental for future sustainability of museum best practices on campus.
Working at the University of Alberta North Campus in Edmonton, Alberta, and under the guidance of University of Alberta Museums’ Collections Management Team, this position is an excellent opportunity to learn the vital role of collections data in an interdisciplinary, academic museum setting. It is also a unique opportunity to gain a general understanding of the business processes for selecting and migrating to a new collections management system, and a deep understanding of pre-migration data management.
The Pre-Migration Data Technician will play a vital role in assessing and preparing our data for migration. Project objectives include:
- Assessing and recommending priority pre-migration and standardization tasks focused on geographic data in the Places Module
- Implementing priority recommendations with the project team
- Identifying and documenting data issues to be addressed in subsequent project phases
- Participating in the user testing phase of the selection process for the new collection management system
- Assisting with data management in support of ongoing reconciliation projects, such as osteobiology reports and care and handling notices, and reviewing and documenting community naming practices.
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
- At least 2 years of post-secondary education in a related field such as a science or humanities discipline, museum studies, or a closely related field
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with others in a team environment
- An appreciation for the skills and meticulous attention to detail required for museum work
- Abilities to analyze, synthesize, and successfully communicate information
- Proficiency in Microsoft and Google Suites, and with spreadsheets in particular. Experience working with databases is an asset. Experience automating data cleaning projects is an asset.
- An enjoyment of, and aptitude for, critical thinking/problem solving
- Ability to work well independently and in a team-oriented environment

This is a 17 week position, running from May 2026 until August 2026. The rate of pay is $22.49 per hour, based on a 35 hour week, plus 4% vacation pay and 3.46% statutory holiday pay. As this position is funded by Young Canada Works, in order to be eligible, candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 30 and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or have refugee status.
