Established in 1943, AWE is the largest public art gallery in Southwestern Ontario and has grown with incredible support from the Windsor-Essex community. At AWE, we share historical Canadian, Indigenous, and contemporary Art with the Windsor-Essex community in inventive and creative ways. Through our engaging educational activities, we spark creativity and conversations. With 15,000 square feet of exhibition space, new takes on our permanent collection of nearly 4000 artworks, and through unexpected partnerships, AWE is the creative heart of Windsor-Essex.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Under the supervision of the Head, Exhibitions and Collections, and working closely with curators, staff, and volunteers, this position supports the implementation of AWE's collection management sytem, Axiell Collections, and the relaunch of AWE's online collections portal. The Collections and Database Assistant is responsible for data clean-up, metadata generation, copyright clearance, digitization assistance, collections research, and other tasks associated with AWE's collection and CMS.
SUMMARY OF KEY DUTIES:
- Securing copyright permissions to share work online, following a priority list generated by AWE staff focusing on Indigenous and equity-deserving artists in our collection (specifically, racialized, neurodiverse, disabled, and women artists in AWE's holdings)
- Preparing alt text descriptions and text descriptions of works to share in our online portal, again following AWE's priority list
- Augmenting catalogue records using hard-copy registration files for priority works in collection
- Transferring collection donor information from Axiell Collections to Keela, AWE's fundraising database
- Capturing information on AWE permanent collection exhibitions using hard-copy registration files
- Assisting with the digitization of works, focusing on priority works and undocumented works on paper
- Assisting with re-inventorying of works on paper
- Assisting with data clean-up and standardization of information in Axiell Collections
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-graduate certificate or Master's Degree in Museum Studies or Information Sciences, or a Bachelor's Degree in Art History, History, or Studio Art with professional or volunteer experience in a museum, gallery, library or archives
- Knowledge of visual arts and the ability to research, prepare, and write about contemporary and historical Canadian and Indigenous visual arts
- Demonstrated proficiency standard office tools and software, including Microsoft 365 applications
- Proficiency in post-production photo editing, using software like Capture One, is an asset.
- Strong written and oral communication and administrative skills
- Proactive approach to problem-solving
- Ability to adapt to the evolving needs of the project

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.
