The Archival Room Assistant will be responsible for improving access to the museum’s collection. This project will improve visitor and research experience and make local history more accessible to the community. The Archival Room Assistant will work with the Museum Coordinator and museum volunteers to re organize the Archival storage room. This project would include assessing the condition of objects within the museum collection and addressing any concerns of archival artifacts to the accessions committee. The archival rooms assistant will help to systematically remove, organize, and replace storage boxes within the museums archival room. The aim of this project is to make it easier to access the museums collection and to also assess the condition of items within the collection and update our item cataloguing software.

This project will also include organizing, scanning, photographing and conducting basic research on new additions to the collection. With these resources, the Archival Room Assistant will assist with research requests throughout the summer, and help provide research for museum exhibits, events, and public programs. The Archival Room Assistant will also write a newsletter article for the North Lanark Historical Society’s fall newsletter

The North Lanark Regional Museum is owned and operated by the North Lanark Historical Society with the goal of collecting, preserving and displaying the history of Mississippi Mills. The museum features several exhibition galleries including seasonal exhibits, permanent local history exhibits, and a pioneer log cabin. The museum collection focuses on local history and includes objects, photographs, archival documents, and a research library.

The ideal candidate for the Archival Room Assistant will be a University or College student working towards a degree in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Archival Studies, Library Studies, Records Management, Business Administration, or a relevant subject. The ideal candidate will have an interest in local history, heritage, and museums. The successful candidate should be a well-spoken, independent, and reliable student who is interested in their community and museums in general. The successful applicant will have a good working knowledge of computers, proven research skills, strong written communication skills as well as the ability to work independently and in a team.
