The Caetani Centre is seeking to recruit an intern eligible for the Young Canada Works program for a summer placement as a Community Engagement Assistant. This full-time position (35 hours per week) runs from May 06 to August 23, 2024 and is dependent on the Centre securing funding.

ABOUT THE CAETANI CENTRE: A 125+ year old designated heritage site near the downtown core of Vernon, BC, the Caetani Centre hosts a variety of arts and cultural programs and events, and houses exhibits of art, objects, textiles and archival materials of the mysterious Caetani family of Italian royalty, their historic and artistic legacy in the North Okanagan, and their fascinating story of 1920s immigration to the region.

The Centre encompasses a large 6,000 sq. foot heritage home/museum and is located on a 1.3 acre park-like property used for programs, events, festivals, exhibits and tours. The property also features several unique studio outbuildings used by working artists and an 800 sq. ft. art gallery housing the permanent collection of Sveva Caetani’s Recapitulation Series. In addition, a regional, national, and international artist- and writer-in-residence program is hosted in the house and is administered by the Centre.

ABOUT THE POSITION: The successful candidate will be curious, creative, congenial, eager to learn, and willing to become an ambassador and storyteller (both in person and through marketing materials).

The Community Engagement Assistant will have excellent communication skills in writing, editing and graphic design in order to assist in marketing and promotion of all aspects of the Caetani programs and events. This will include the creation of press releases, print materials, blog posts, website and social media updates, e-newsletters, video and more.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be an excellent communicator, have a demonstrated fluency in graphic design software, be familiar with industry marketing standards, and able to engage and liaise with the public in an inclusive, respectful manner. They should demonstrate competency in computer applications for graphic design, word processing, website editing, data management, and spreadsheets. The candidate should possess a keen interest in arts, culture, heritage, and community engagement.

Other duties include assistance with guest admission and orientation, gift shop sales, volunteer and membership recruiting, fundraising, public relations, event set up and organization, and some business administration. General light duties for venue and garden maintenance may be required. Customer relations/service, retail sales, and tourism/hospitality experience, and Serving It Right Certification (or ability and willingness to obtain it), are also beneficial to the position.

ABOUT YOU: You should have an advanced level and understanding of English (oral, reading and writing) and an intermediate level and understanding of Microsoft Office Word, spreadsheet and database programs, Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Suite, as well as online resources and applications, digital presentation and video editing programs, and social media platforms. Customer service and a basic understanding of POS systems would be an asset. A broad interest in arts, culture, heritage, tourism, and community engagement would be an asset. Additional language competency would be beneficial but is not required.

Candidates should ideally be studying in the field of marketing, communications, journalism, technical writing, tourism/hospitality, museum studies or related disciplines, and/or graphic design.

The successful candidate must register on the Young Canada Works site, meeting all of their criteria:
• are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
• are legally entitled to work in Canada;
• are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;
• have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
• intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.
