ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
The Oakville Historical Society is a community-based, volunteer organization that preserves and promotes the historical heritage of the Town of Oakville, Ontario. The Society was founded in 1953 and has an extensive collection covering various aspects of the history of Oakville and the former Trafalgar Township. The collections include original documents, pictures, newspapers, maps, albums, letters, diaries and a library of approximately 1,500 volumes. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
We have a position available for an interested student to obtain a good variety of experiences in an archival organization that seeks to bring its collection to the public. We envision the successful candidate working on up to four projects over the course of the summer. The planned projects include reviewing and accessioning a sizeable and important new donation, working on a new project that includes a physical and virtual display, expanding and building on two ongoing projects that bring our collection to the public in virtual presentations.

PREFERRED BACKGROUND
The ideal applicant would be enrolled in, or working towards, a college or university program in archival studies or a related program of study. The position will be of particular interest to those looking to gain work experience in collections management, digital cataloguing, working with historic documents and bringing an archive to the public. Previous work experience in a heritage organization would be an asset. This position requires the ability to work well both independently and as part of a small team.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The successful candidate will be required to work on site at the Oakville Historical Society offices in Oakville. To be eligible for the position, the candidate should be legally entitled to work in Canada, be returning to school in the next academic year and be eligible under the terms of the Young Canada Works program.
