The British Columbia Aviation Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving aircraft, artifacts, and stories relating to the aviation history of British Columbia. Situated at the Victoria International Airport in North Saanich, BC, the museum occupies approximately 45,000 square feet of display space and a collection of over 10, 000 artifacts. The Museum has three full-time staff and over one-hundred volunteers that are dedicated to the operation of the museum. Our collection has more than 40 aircraft on display that once flew in Canadian skies, mostly over British Columbia with our earliest aircraft dating back to 1910. In some cases, our aircraft on display are all that is left of the aircraft that took to the skies over BC.

Currently, the BC Aviation Museum is looking for an intern to primarily work in the Collection Department, while also assisting with various tasks and projects that are essential to the operation of the museum. The position will entail working with a variety of departments, which will allow for the intern to earn knowledge and hands on skills in all aspects of the museum’s operations. We believe it is important for the intern to experience working with an array of departments, as the majority of museums and heritage sites across Canada employ six or less staff members, leading staff to share/complete the work of multiple positions.
For most of the internship, the intern will work alongside the Collections Manager to learn the ins and outs of efficiently operating a museum collection. This will include, but not limited to, working with our collections management system (Catalogit), working hands on with the artifacts, and working alongside the Display Technicians to create new displays.
When not working in collections, the intern will work alongside the Executive Director and Museum Administrator to learn about how a museum operates. This will include job shadowing, aiding with projects, and attending meetings to broaden the intern's knowledge of a working museum. One of the projects the intern will work on with the Executive Director and Museum Administrator is the planning and preparation of the museum’s open house, which is the museum’s largest annual fundraiser. By working on this event, it will also provide the intern with valuable information on event planning and fundraising initiatives that can be applied while working at future organizations.
Ideally, the candidate will have graduated from a program in museum studies, art history, social history, archaeology, archival management, or any other similar programs.
The candidate should have an understanding of collections management systems and proficient computer skills, including the ability to use the Microsoft Office suite. Advanced English skills are required, especially in written form, as is the ability to maintain accurate records.

To be eligible for this position, you must meet the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program criteria for internships (https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/funding/young-canada-works/students-graduates/careers-heritage-graduates.html).
An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
• are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
• are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
• are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
• are a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate).
Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.

The BC Aviation Museum is committed to the principles of diversity and employment equity under the Employment Equity Act, and we strive to ensure that our workforce reflects the diverse nature of Canadian society. Our policy is to provide equal employment opportunities to all qualified persons without regard to race, gender, colour, disability, national origin, age, religion, union affiliation, sexual orientation, veteran status, citizenship, gender identity and/or expression, or other status protected by law.
