The Bonavista Museum and Archives is seeking a Museum Assistant to join the Museum team. The successful applicant will assist with running a children’s summer program and with general museum duties. The ability to work with children and the general public is required. General computer skills and knowledge of local and Canadian history would be an asset.

To be eligible for employment applicant must be at least 16 years of age or older, enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary program on a full-time or part-time basis, and returning to school following their summer employment. For positions working with children, a completed Vulnerable Sector Check must be provided prior to hire.

Duties:
1. To work with the Museum Curator to oversee the development and implementation of age-appropriate summer cultural children’s programs for the youth of Bonavista and the surrounding area based on the exhibitions and displays at the Bonavista Museum. This will be 12 one-day programs with different content and activities throughout the season from June to September.
2. To provide these programs at the Museum or on the Museum grounds and to provide supervision of the participants in the program.
3. To ensure that the program area is set up before the program begins that the space and surrounding areas of the museum grounds are safe and clean and that all supplies/equipment are put away after each program.
4. To ensure that the Museum, its artifacts, displays, and assets are protected from damage and to set up/tear down the program leaving the space in useable/presentable condition after each program event.
5. To provide the Bonavista Museum with parent/children contact lists and photographs/images with completed photo release forms to help promote the program to the community, donors, and sponsors.
6. Meet and greet visitors at the front desk, answer questions about the Museum, and community and gather visitor data.
7. Interpret history and the themes of the Museum through dialogue and guided tours with visitors.
8. Raise public awareness of the Bonavista Museum through social media engagement.


What you will need to succeed:
• strong communication and presentation skills, both virtually and in person in front of audiences
• proven interpersonal skills with the ability to be a great teammate
• ability to creatively and enthusiastically engage with visitors, while confidently presenting information to groups of varying sizes and backgrounds
• ability to quickly build an understanding of the Museum's history, heritage, and mission
• experience providing exceptional customer service by addressing questions, providing assistance, and ensuring guest comfort and satisfaction
• A Vulnerable Sector Check must be provided before hire.

Nice-to have:
• knowledge of the local area
• experience in Museology or Education
• previous experience working with children
• previous experience developing programs
