Collections Data Management Assistant

University of Alberta Museums, with the assistance of Young Canada Works, invites applications for a focused and detail oriented Collections Data Assistant to enhance our museum database, Mimsy XG. Data in Mimsy XG is essential for online collection access to one of Canada’s largest academic and research museum collections, with millions of objects and specimens in both the Natural Sciences and Humanities.

Working at the University of Alberta North Campus in Edmonton, Alberta, and under the guidance of University of Alberta Collection Data Management Team, the Collections Data Assistant will review database records specifically for the people associated with University of Alberta Museums collection objects and specimens, to verify accuracy and promote online discoverability. Project objectives include:
- Developing a plan to confirm when online name matches refer to the same individuals listed in the database
- Conducting the research indicated in the plan, using online and hardcopy sources as well as consultations with collection curators and staff
- Documenting confirmed and new information in Mimsy XG, using collection data management best practices

The ideal candidate for this position will have:
- At least 2 years of post-secondary education in a related field such as a science or humanities discipline, museum studies, or a closely related field
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with others in a team environment
- An appreciation for the meticulous attention to detail required for database work
- Experience or an interest in a career in museums
- Abilities to analyze, synthesize, and successfully communicate information
- Proficiency in Microsoft and Google Suites, and with spreadsheets in particular. Experience working with databases is an asset.
- An enjoyment of critical thinking/problem (puzzle) solving
- Ability to work well as an individual and in team oriented environment
- The qualifications stipulated by Young Canada Works

This is a 16 week position, running from May 2024 until August 2024. The rate of pay is $20.58 per hour, based on a 35 hour week, plus 4% vacation pay and 3.46% statutory holiday pay. As this position is funded by Young Canada Works, in order to be eligible, candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 30 and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or have refugee status.
