Project & Job Objectives:
The Education Assistant (EA) is an essential part of the AGP team and will work closely with the Curator, Education Programming Coordinator, Communications & Volunteer Coordinator, and AGP Art Educators during an integral section of our programming schedule. The AGP provides important programming and access to art and art education in our region. With a small staff, the EA is integrated quickly into most aspects of education and outreach programming, and they are afforded many opportunities to make an impactful contribution. The EA’s role will primarily be to assist with the development and delivery of education programs, both in person and online. The AGP is a prime environment in which to gain hands-on experience in art education for all ages, allowing core staff to continue the day-to-day activities and develop programs for the future. The role of the Education Assistant is to ensure the quality and continuity of our summer education programming and to assist in the development of future programs as well. The impact of the EA goes well beyond the duration of the contract.

During the contract, work will be conducted primarily onsite, with some potential for off-site work for outreach and engagement events. Staff meet regularly in-person and over Microsoft Teams to update, share files, and report on projects. The EA will have access to a full set of equipment and tech support provided by the City of Peterborough IT department to aid in their daily work.

The EA acts as a primary frontline contact person for our annual seven weeks of Summer Art Camps for children ages 4 to 12. This includes registration, processing payments, and maintaining class lists and up-to-date Health Forms for all participants. Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with the preparation, delivery, and development of education programs, overseeing check-in and check-outs of child registrants and volunteers, assisting with the supervision of youth volunteers, scheduling lunch breaks for volunteers and educators, overseeing supervision for outdoor play, and monitoring the safety of all participants. Additionally, they will serve as a liaison between the Educators and Youth Volunteers, as well as the Education Programming Coordinator. The EA will also be able to develop curriculum and lead programming for a children’s camp (TBD - in consultation with the Education Programming Coordinator) during the summer camp schedule. In addition to summer camp programming, the EA will also assist in the development and delivery of current and future public education programs, such as outreach and engagement, school programs, exhibition tours, digital education content, and future public educational programs that focus on providing access to art that inspire and challenge our audience.

Other tasks include assisting with marketing for the AGP’s Annual Kawartha Autumn Studio Tour and preparations for the upcoming education year. The EA will also provide front-line customer service and support for Visitor Services, Gallery Shop and Front Desk Reception during exhibition openings, artist talks, and other activities associated with a vibrant public gallery as needed.
Orientation and Supervision will primarily be carried out by the Education Programming Coordinator and the Curator.
Our ideal candidate will have proven organizational and leadership skills in arts education and volunteer management. They must be able to work independently with minimal supervision; coordinate several tasks at one time; and must be a team player committed to quality customer service.

The ideal candidate should have a background in education or a studio art practice; a combination of both is strongly preferred. They should also have a keen interest and demonstrated background in working with children and youth. Experience leading small groups of children/peers is considered an asset. Experience in Volunteer Management and Customer Service is also an asset.

The ideal candidate will be required to provide (or obtain) a current criminal reference check with vulnerable sector check (if 18 or older), First Aid and Accessible Customer Service training, as a condition of employment. Computer skills required: Word, Excel. Photoshop is considered an asset.
