Position Description: The Canadian Federation of Friends of Museums (CFFM) is a national organization dedicated to increasing the number, participation and effectiveness of museum friends groups, volunteers, donors, trustees and others who offer their support, time, money and expertise to the museum community.
The CFFM plans to fill a position of Membership & CommunicationsOfficer with a YCW qualified student for an assignment. The duties of the position are as follows.
1. The student will work under the supervision of the Executive Director in support of a membership drive. Duties will involve analysis of the membership base, development of a database of volunteer groups across Canada, determination of strategies to attract members and implementation of the strategies.
2. Under the direction of the Executive Director while working with a research team (Board members) the student will assist in carrying out a research proposal intended to explore the needs and priorities of the thousands of volunteers supporting museums across Canada.
3. Under the direction of the Executive Director the student will assist in developing digital newsletter and social media campaign, as well as update the CFFM website.
4. Under the direction of the Executive Director, the student will assist in coordination of a Board of Directors meeting with agenda and minute taking.
Orientation and Training:
During the first week of this assignment the student will meet with the Executive Director, other Montrealbased Board members and the staff of the Macdonald Stewart Foundation (MSF). An assessment of the student's need for specific training on systems and procedures related to CFFM and MSF operations will be determined. Following this assessment, priorities will be set for training to ensure that the student has the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the duties of the position. Over the course of the assignment, the Executive Director in consultation with the student will determine the need for additional training.
The student will have daily access to a Board member located in Montreal and weekly meetings with the Executive Director, as well as staff in the MSF office. The student will have excellent opportunities to make professional contacts, build networks and learn from experienced professionals.
Supervision:
Weekly meetings will be held involving the student and the Executive Director, either in person or by virtual meetings, to review goals for the week, training needs, operational issues to be resolved and the overall progress of projects and responsibilities. The student will have unrestricted access to the Executive Director over the duration of the assignment.
Characteristics of City/Region:
Old in soul, but young at heart, Montréal has a storied past that includes First Nations settlement, French colony and a British stronghold. Its name comes from its centerpiece—the majestic Mont Royal, a gentle mountain that, throughout history, has been its backbone and backyard.
