The role of the Archival Media Project Manager is to detect and research filmmakers who are under-represented in the Winnipeg Film Group (WFG) catalog and, upon locating such data, to organize, digitize, and make accessible the vulnerable media materials. Of the digitized materials, the Archival Media Project Manager will curate a short film program and compose an accompanying curatorial text.
The Winnipeg Film Group (WFG) is an artist-run organization committed to promoting the art of cinema. The WFG supports filmmakers and engages communities through education, production, exhibition, and distribution. Founded in 1974, the WFG houses a large part of their catalog in a film vault containing formats such as 16mm, 35mm, and Super8 film works.
The ideal candidate for the WFG’s Intern position is passionate about filmmaking and digital media, archiving and preservation processes, and is socially conscious and critically attuned to the ways in which institutional archives have omitted and altered certain voices and experiences. A Bachelor of Arts (BA) or equivalent experience is requested. It is required that the candidate be interested in fields such as film and media studies, curatorial studies, cultural studies, anticolonial studies, archival studies, or creative writing. Experience with archival processes is requested. It is necessary that the candidate be proficient in email communications and able to use either google or outlook suites. It is requested, but not required, that the candidate be familiar with analog film technologies. It is also helpful if the candidate has relative familiarity with video editing software; however, this skill is not required. Due to the counter-archival nature of the project, we will be encouraging participation from folks who belong to equity-deserving groups. We invite applicants to self-identify.
The WFG is located in the heart of Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District in the Artspace building.
Interested candidates can apply by emailing a cover letter and CV to distribution@winnipegfilmgroup.com with the subject line: Young Canada Works Application. Please provide both documents in a single PDF attached to your email.
The deadline to apply is April 28, 2023.
