The Communications and Digital Media Specialist will contribute as a valued team member with the Pacific Museum of Earth (PME: www.pme.ubc.ca), Vancouver’s premier Earth Science museum. Located in the University of British Columbia's Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, the PME provides educational opportunities at all levels regarding Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, rocks, minerals and fossils, as well as environmental and planetary sciences. The PME is a learning hub for UBC students, faculty, staff and visitors and a key outreach venue at UBC.

One emergent issue outlined in our recent strategic planning exercise was how to increase and strengthen the museum’s online presence. Now more than ever, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this goal is vital to the success of our core mission: connect the public with UBC research and learning—specifically by showcasing the wonders of Earth and other planets through virtual outreach programming and exhibits.

The Communications and Digital Media Specialist will play a pivotal role in creating digital content for outreach activities as well as increasing our visitor engagement through our social media platforms. This position will give a recent graduate a high-impact work experience within the tight-knit museum environment of one of UBC’s leading outreach, research and teaching facilities.

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop and design new and creative content for social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Soundcloud, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Flickr) and monitor user engagement.
- Identify and produce digital media content including videos and photography that will showcase the museum’s galleries, exhibits, events, and highlight research/teaching/staff stories within the EOAS department and their impact on the community.
- Act as web content manager, write and edit content, develop and recommend methods to streamline the workflow for creating and updating the museum’s website.
- Coordinate all communications projects, including drafting, editing, layout, and print
- Produce or source relevant photography and video content.
- Assist in developing, designing, organizing, and managing the museum’s communications package, including brochures, fact sheets, infographics, presentations, and reports.
- Ensure a consistent look and feel throughout all communications and marketing materials, ensuring all content produced adheres to the requirements of PME’s brand identity/graphic standards and brand creative platform (tone and manner).
- Assist in event coordination and promotion.
- Coordinate attendance tracking for events and pre/post-surveys for outreach programming and events when necessary.
- Support certain ongoing and up-and-coming activities aligned with the PME’s strategic initiatives and plan.
- Create, maintain, and monitor program or event participation information in organized database.
- Maintain clear and comprehensive file databases for programming and events and assist with yearly reporting activities.
- Take initiative to identify and respond to emerging opportunities to profile the museum, its programming and exhibits, using appropriate communication tools.
- Create and modify templates for web-based interactive applications, including virtual exhibits or programming.

The Pacific Museum of Earth aims to showcase the wonders of our dynamic planet Earth, promote an understanding of processes happening on Earth and other planets, and inspire visitors to observe and respect Earth’s magnificent landscapes and treasures.

Candidate Profile:
This position is open to all recent graduates from undergraduate or graduate programs. Preference will be given to students with a postsecondary degree in communications, marketing, journalism, media studies, or equivalent. The candidate should have the following skills:
- Excellent working knowledge of computers (PC and/or Mac)
- Intermediate knowledge of graphics software (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
- Intermediate working knowledge of WordPress (basic knowledge of HTML and CSS preferred).
- Excellent knowledge of using Internet applications and tools.
- Advanced knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft office suite.
- Intermediate knowledge of camera equipment (DLSR, GoPro)
- Intermediate knowledge of and experience with Zoom, Doodle Polls, Microsoft Teams, Slack, or other communication software.

Most importantly, the candidate should have a willingness to learn, and be detail-oriented. Previous experience in journalism or communication, public relations position that included using social media is an asset.

An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada;
- are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
- are unemployed or underemployed;
- are a college or university graduate; and
- are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program.

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.
