Arnprior and District Museum

The Arnprior and District Museum is centrally located in a circa 1896 Thomas Fuller post office in downtown Arnprior. The mandate of the Arnprior and District Museum

Characteristics of Arnprior Museum and City/Region

The Town of Arnprior is situated at the confluence of the mighty Ottawa and Madawaska Rivers “Where the Rivers Meet,” according to the town logo. Arnprior is a thriving community with a population of 8,795 people according the 2016 Statistics Canada census profile, and it has grown more than 8% since the previous census in 2011. It continues to grow today with a huge amount of new construction underway. Situated in the downtown core in the historic former Thomas Fuller post office and clock tower is the Arnprior and District Museum, which plays a vital part in the area’s heritage and culture. It is only with the anticipated financial support of YCW, and with the help of the students, that the museum can be open 7-days a week in summer, and provide the much-needed historical perspective the community deserves. Listings of cultural events are on the Town of Arnprior website https://www.arnprior.ca/en/recreation-and-culture/recreation-and-culture.
Improvements have recently been made to the Town of Arnprior’s infrastructure, streetscape and accessibility. The open-air Arnprior Market made its debut in the downtown core in 2017, just steps from the Arnprior and District Museum and will hopefully commence again once the COVID-19 pandemic has passed.. The market brings both locals and day-trippers to the area.
There are many cultural and heritage activities in Arnprior, and the Arnprior and District Museum plays a community hub for several:
• Summer and March Break day camps for children at the Arnprior and District Museum
• Arnprior Winter Carnival in January – the museum is open and children’s crafts and activities play a major part
• Pioneer PA Days and holidays (Easter, Halloween, Remembrance Day, etc.), where children learn about life in the past, participate in games and activities and create their own heritage craft
• Priorpalooza, a day of music in the park and activities at the Arnprior and District Museum.
• Sunday Concerts in the Park at Robert Simpson Park all summer long
• Canada Day activities take place at the museum, Bell Park and Robert Simpson Park, with fireworks just steps away at the waterfront. Students have worn period costumes at the museum, there was a colouring contest, lemonade stand, a blacksmith and woodsman displays and re-enactments, and the hit of the show was the 1923 International fire truck, which is a museum artefact.
• Highland dance competitions are held every summer at Robert Simpson Park
• An assortment of theatre productions by the Prior Players and Two Rivers Musical Productions
• Arnprior Fair has taken place prior to COVID-19.
• There were two demolition derbies at the fairgrounds in 2018 and may continue again after COVID-19
• Doctors Dining Duels take place September
• Learn to Sew for youth from 8 to 17 years at the museum
• Events such as Wildlife Sculptures in Wood took place in September and October 2018 at the museum. A Meet the Artist day was very popular too.
• The museum was fortunate to have travelling exhibits which brought in additional visitors and class visits: Freemasonry: A History Hidden in Plain Sight was a travelling exhibit at the museum in 2018, Toys from the Past in 2019, and Unmasking Influenza in 2020.
• The museum participated in the 150th anniversary of the local Madawaska Lodge No. 196 with a photo and artefact retrospective of the lodge and the town of Arnprior.
• Psychic readings have been hosted at the museum, in conjunction with Inchbudie (Albert St.) Cemetery tours offered by the museum Curator
• The museum has hosted antique quilt and textile shows over several years, displaying local and antique quilts from across Ontario
• Santa at the Museum was a well-attended event in 2018 and 2019, where children could have their photos taken with Santa Claus, have delicious cookies while playing some fun games, and create a craft to take home
• A very active Seniors’ Active Living Centre is just a short walk to the museum
