Camp Cosmos is a summer day camp for children from families on low-income, particularly those of single-parent, refugee, immigrant, and/or Indigenous backgrounds. The camp is located in downtown Montreal, between the McGill and Place-des-Arts metros. We are an environmental camp committed to providing a summer of fun and discovery for our campers. We celebrate the richness that diversity of experience brings to our camp community.

Each summer, our Accessibility Program provides the opportunity for children with special needs to participate in camp life by pairing them up with a Shadow (a staff member who provides one-on-one accompaniment and support for the child).

Job Description:
Working as a team with the Camp Coordinator and other camp staff, the Accessibility Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the camp’s Accessibility Program. The Accessibility Coordinator will design and deliver training for the Shadows and Counsellors, and be a support and resource for the Shadows throughout the summer.

Responsibilities:
- Recruit campers with special-needs to attend camp (contacting CLSCs and other community organizations that work with Accessibility efforts)
- Meet with parents, social workers and/or educators of campers with special needs before camp starts to better understand the particularities of each camper
- Design and lead training workshops for Shadows and Counsellors around creating a safer space for all campers, particularly campers with special needs
- Participate in staff training
- Work as a Shadow throughout the 6 weeks of camp
- With Camp Coordinator, conduct mid-camp evaluations of Shadows
- Maintain open communication with Camp Coordinator and other camp program coordinators
- Facilitate weekly Shadow meetings
- Act as a mentor to Shadows

Work plan:
Week 1-3:
- Basic orientation given by Camp Coordinator with other program coordinators
- Recruit campers with special-needs to attend camp
- Meet with parents, social workers, and/or educators of registered campers with special needs (ideally with campers present) to better understand the particularities of each camper
- Determine which Shadow will be matched with which camper(s).
- Prepare Shadow training covering the following: roles and responsibilities of a Shadow; program structure; general information on working with children with special needs; sharing information gathered from in-person meetings with parents, social workers, and/or educators; Shadow team-building
- Prepare 1-2 workshops for Counsellors around supporting children with special needs; adapting games and activities; creating a safe and supportive environment for children of all abilities.
- Acquire all needed support material for program
- Prepare outline for workshop(s) with campers.
-Get all information necessary regarding Transport Adapté account numbers and other necessary contact information from parents/caregivers
Weeks 4-6: June 20th-July 1st
- Participate in general, full-staff training
- Give Shadow training workshops
Weeks 7-12:
- Act as a Shadow for a camper with special needs throughout camp
- Introduce Shadows to the children they will be Shadowing
- Participate in daily staff meetings
- Hold weekly Shadow meetings
- Provide support to Shadows on an ongoing basis
- Maintain communication with parents of children with special needs as needed, under supervision of Camp Coordinator
- Prepare and communicate mid-camp Shadow program evaluation
Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of a second language (French or English), strong communication in a first language (French or English), additional languages an asset
- Experience working with children with special needs
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Experience with program planning and evaluation an asset
- Experience in leadership position an asset
- Strong communication skills (listening, expressing)
- Commitment to anti-oppressive practice
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to think outside the box, problem-solve
- Good time management skills

Conditions:
- Salary to be determined by Young Canada Works ($12-$14/hr)
- 7hrs/day before and after camp: 9am-5pm (unpaid lunch)
- 8hrs/day during Camp: 8:30am-4:30pm (paid lunch)
-12 Weeks (May 22nd to August 11)
