Background:
The NSCAD Library is Atlantic Canada's largest dedicated library supporting undergraduate and graduate education in the fields of art, design, fashion, craft, and media. In addition to substantial circulating, reference, online, and periodical collections, the library is home to unique special collections and archives that document the history of NSCAD, Canadian and international art practices, and the development of art and design education in Canada and internationally. The library is a member of the regional and national consortiums and organizations (Novanet Library Consortium, Council of Atlantic University Libraries, CRKN) and maintains a small staff of Librarians and Library Technicians dedicated to providing quality library services at NSCAD.

Project:
The primary objective of this project is to hire a new graduate as a communications intern for six months to work alongside library staff in conducting a critical analysis of library communication and workflow practices through the lens of critical librarianship, antiracist social justice, and anti-oppressive methodologies. The Intern will also produce a document outlining recommendations stemming from the analysis, and will work with staff to begin the implementation of recommendations. Throughout the project the Intern will work alongside staff to analyze, critique, suggest, and promote collection materials, library pedagogical practices, and communication strategies utilized by the library including social media (Instagram, facebook), website tools (springshare libguides and library website), video tutorials, physical communication tools onsite (signage, window exhibitions, etc.). The ultimate goal of the project is to improve communications and the ways we interact with community at the NSCAD Library, and remove barriers and improve service particularly for our users in the BIPOC and LGBTQ2SIA+ communities, and our users with disabilities. Additionally a large incentive of this project is to provide a new graduate interested in critical library work and communications a quality employment opportunity that will provide them work experience to build skills in communications, community engagement, critical library theories and methods, and collections analysis and promotion. The Intern will also be supported in developing skills and experience in their areas of interests as it pertains to library work and communications. The incumbent will be supervised and work with the Collections and Systems Librarian and Library Director, and throughout the course of the position the incumbent will be supported in furthering their job search skills, joining and participating in professional library and/or communications associations (depending on the professional interests of the Intern), and attending local events (library and archives talks, exhibitions, and artist talks, etc.) to build their knowledge and professional network.

Candidate profile:
The ideal candidate for this position is a recent graduate of an information management, art and design, communications, or public relations program. Candidates with demonstrated interest and/or experience in critical library practice are preferred. As the goal of this position is to critically analyze library practices and communications through a social justice and anti-oppressive lens, candidates that identify with BIPOC, LGBTQ2SIA+ , and disability experiences would provide a welcome voice and experience to this work and are highly encouraged to apply.
