The Archive of the Jesuits in Canada (AJC) is seeking candidates for two (2) positions as Reference Assistant under the Young Canada Works program, Student Summer Jobs. These are 16-week positions with flexibility concerning starting dates, end dates and part-time employment. The positions are conceived for four days per week, and the two positions will be staggered with one beginning June 1st, 2021 and the latest end date projected as December 15th, 2021. The Archive of the Jesuits in Canada / Archive des jésuites au Canada is located in Montréal, Québec. The candidate will be working in a bilingual environment. Knowledge of both French and English is necessary; however, candidates with intermediate language knowledge may apply. The AJC is the official repository of the records of the Jesuit presence in Canada, and holds extensive historical archival records documenting Jesuit activities in this country. The AJC also holds the personal archival fonds of Canadian Jesuits and the institutional archives of Jesuit-led projects or organizations. The Reference Assistant will be dealing with inquiries from different types of researchers and conducting preliminary research on such topics as Jesuit history, Indigenous history, Canadian and Quebecois Catholic history, and genealogy. Duties will include reception, registration of inquiries, reference room supervision, retrieval and shelving of documents, catalogue searches and development of research strategies.

Qualifications include preference for students presently enrolled in university archival or information studies with some knowledge of archival principles and theory. Alternatively, students in History, Public History or Canadian Studies, with a demonstrated interest in archives or collections management, will also be considered. Candidates must be fully aware of care and handling of archival materials, and patience, attention to detail and accuracy are essential. Clear and precise penmanship is also necessary. The candidates will be required to work collaboratively in a team environment, and must be sensitive to working with donors, stakeholders and researchers. As the working environment is bilingual, the candidates must ideally be fluent in French and English, with excellent reading and good writing and communication skills. An ability to lift 25 lb. boxes is required.
