Job Title: Museum & Archives Assistant
Start Date: May 1, 2017 to August 26, 2017
Schedule: 7 hours per day, 5 days a week for a total of 35 hours per week. Candidates must be available to work weekends.
Job Description: The Museum & Archives Assistant assists the Lacombe & District Historical Society to deliver important cultural and tourism services and host special events during local Festivals and community celebrations at the Museums in Lacombe. Their duties include; welcoming and providing information to visitors, delivering guided tours and educational programs, researching and writing about local history, creating and updating online content, and assisting with the delivery of Canada 150 community memory projects, exhibits and celebrations.
Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria of the Young Canada Works Student program. Ideal candidates include post-secondary students pursuing studies in a related field and/or wanting to pursue a career in the cultural, tourism and/or non-profit sectors. Strong writing, computer and communications skills are required.
Due to the historic nature of our buildings, access to these buildings is limited and not wheel chair accessible. Ability to do some lifting and climb stairs is required.

Regional Characteristics:
The City of Lacombe is home to 12,000 residents and is a popular tourism destination due to its rich heritage. Lacombe's historic downtown boasts one of the most intact Edwardian streetscapes in Alberta. In 2014, Lacombe’s Main Street won the Canada’s Greatest Places Contest from the Canadian Institute of Planners. The Lacombe & District Historical Society operates 3 Museums located the historic downtown; The Michener House Museum is the oldest remaining home in Lacombe and dates back to 1894. The Flatiron Museum, the most prominent building in Lacombe, was built in 1904. The Lacombe Blacksmith Shop Museum is the oldest operating shop of its kind in Alberta and was built in 1902. The 3 sites receive over 5,000 visitors a year which includes over 900 school children and 3,000 visitors during the summer months. Lacombe is home to a variety of festivals and events throughout the year. The Museums are involved with these larger community celebrations and play a large part in promoting the region and providing a quality visitor experience.
Lacombe is situated half way between Edmonton and Calgary, along the QE 2 Highway. It is primarily an agricultural center and is home to Federal and Provincial Agriculture Research Stations.
