Library Community Engagement Intern

The Cumberland Public Libraries headquartered in Amherst, Nova Scotia has an opening for a creative and innovative Library Community Engagement Intern. Amherst is located on the Nova Scotia / New Brunswick border and is two hours from Halifax and 40 minutes from Moncton. The Cumberland Regional Library is one of nine public library systems in Nova Scotia and serves a population of approximately 30,000 through seven branch libraries and Borrow by Mail service.

Under the direction of the Chief Librarian, the Library Community Engagement Intern is responsible for increasing awareness of library services through the creation and delivery of traditional and digital marketing and publicity strategies, maintain and modify the Library website and social media channels, and coordinating adult and senior services and programming throughout the region. Within the management team works to improve overall regional library services.


• Bachelor’s degree

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license

• Available to work a flexible schedule including days, weekends and evenings. Some overnight travel required.

• Understanding of small, rural communities and the role of the library.



• Promotes library programs and service.

• Periodically visits branches to conduct programming.

• Give presentations and demonstrations on library services.

• Participates in provincial meetings relating to services, promotions, and programming as well as others as required.

• Visits community groups, etc. promoting library services.

• Develops partnerships with external agencies.


• Works assigned circulation desk shifts

• Offers general reference and reader’s advisory


• Coordinates and delivers communications to the public, through a variety of media, regarding library services and programs (including traditional media, social media, monthly newsletter, etc.)

• Assisting with library website.

Library support

• Assisting in library fundraising.

• Recruiting and organizing volunteers.

• May be assigned other duties and projects as required which may supersede regular tasks.

• Some evening and weekend hours will be required.


$20.03/hour plus vacation pay

Term: 12 months with possibility of extension
