The job is for a tour guide providing tours of Grants Old Mill Museum located on Sturgeon Creek near Portage Ave in Winnipeg. The Museum is operated by the St. James Assiniboia Pioneer Association Inc. under contract to the City of Winnipeg. The main objective of the museum is to tell the story of Cuthbert Grant, first Leader of the Metis Nation, the fur trade era of the 1800’s and to tell Metis culture. Also, we operate a working water flour mill that was originally constructed by Cuthbert Grant in 1829 and rebuilt in 1975. The student will be required to demonstrate the operation of the mill and explain the working parts of a water mill.
Location: Grants Old Mill 2777 Portage Ave. Winnipeg MB.
Wages: $11.25 per hour, 40 hours per week (average)
Start/end: May 20 to Aug. 31
Job Description:
-provide tours of the museum according to defined guidelines
-open and close museum in absence of supervisor
-work with minimal supervision
-clean museum and ensure museum is always neat and tidy
-display a strong interest in Manitoba heritage
-carry out history research and exhibit production as directed by the museum board and mill manager
-two positions to be filled -special consideration to priority group students
Qualifications
-post secondary student
-returning to studies in the fall
-good public speaking skills
-ability to work with others
-ability to be polite and courteous to the public under all circumstances
-always neat and tidy and follow the dress code
-honesty as candidate will be handling money
-willingness to attend museum board meetings as required
-willingness to work weekends and holidays (museum is open six days a week)
-fluent in both official languages a special consideration
-other related duties work with minimal supervision
