Description:
Working closely with the Toronto Botanical Garden’s education team, the Education Assistant will plan and deliver nature-based programs for elementary school groups and summer camps. These programs, which support the Ontario school curriculum, immerse children in the natural world and draw connections for children between the natural world and art and culture. Students will participate in hands-on activities including water testing in Wilket Creek, exploring habitats in the Wilket Creek ravine, farming in TBG’s Teaching Garden, and creating nature art. Responsibilities:
• Teach curriculum-based educational programs for elementary and middle-school students
• Assist with the planning, preparation and clean-up of TBG’s school programs
• Assist with the planning, preparation and teaching of nature-based summer camps for children between the ages of 3 to 15.
• Assist with the planning and preparation of day camps for children from high-needs communities through our Green Adventure program and Leadership Camp
• Assist with the maintenance of program spaces including the Teaching Garden and Children’s Centre
• Care for plants, vermicomposting worms, and other living creatures
• Assist with leading volunteers and interns
• Some administrative duties
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic educator with a passion for natural heritage interpretation. A teacher’s degree is not required but preference will be given to those pursuing one. An academic background in the natural sciences is also considered an asset.
In addition, the successful candidate must:
• be fluent in English with excellent oral communication
• have experience working with children and youth from schools and/or camps
• have experience in environmental or outdoor education
• have an interest in horticulture, food security, environmental science and/or nature
• have basic proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
• be creative, patient, flexible and positive
• be able to work as a member of a team and independently
• be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Must have, or be willing to acquire, a current Police Reference Check and basic First Aid certificate

This is a Canadian Heritage YCW supported position for full-time students who are intending to return to full-time studies in the next semester.

You are eligible if you:
• are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; Note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
• are legally entitled to work in Canada;
• are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• are registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory;
• are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW;
• have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job;
• have finished the school term at the start of employment
• intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.
