Job Description:

The Curatorial Assistant at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum will be working with the Executive Director/Curator to develop and implement a special outdoor exhibition called the “Worker’s Walk and Staircase” in celebration of the village of Almonte’s 150th anniversary (1870-1871) as well as rejuvenating one of the museum’s permanent exhibits. The Curatorial Assistant position will feature opportunities for exhibition development, including researching and displaying artifacts, as well as designing and creating interpretive panels, display cases and art installations of the “Worker’s Walk” outdoor exhibition and in the permanent gallery at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum. The Curatorial Assistant position is designed for recent graduates of museum studies or related fields, in order to gain experience in museum curatorship, project management and historical research, while also learning about the functions of a local, not-for-profit museum and working within the municipal community.


Description of Tasks

Workers Walk Outdoor Exhibition:

• Research and develop interpretation plan for exhibition

• Develop and create interpretive panels

• Create new showcases or renovate existing showcases for exhibition

• Research and develop costs for the building, creation and installation of showcases, exhibit panels, artifact mounts and artifact transport.

• Research and select artifacts for display

• Develop placement plan for interpretive panels, showcases, artifacts etc.


Permanent Gallery Exhibition:

• Research and develop interpretation plan for exhibition

• Develop and create interpretive panels

• Create new or renovate existing showcases for the exhibition

• Create a budget for the exhibition.

• Research and select artifacts for display

• Develop placement plan for interpretive panels, showcases, artifacts etc.


Candidate Profile

Job Title: Curatorial Assistant

Location: Mississippi Valley Textile Museum, Almonte, Ontario

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm, some evenings and weekends



Requirements:

An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:

• are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);

• are legally entitled to work in Canada;

• are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;

• are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;

• will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;

• are unemployed or underemployed;

• are a college or university graduate;

• are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program; and

• have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.


Candidates should possess:

• Ability to manage a program

• Knowledge, experience, and capability of using a variety of computer programs including MS Word, Access and Excel, Windows, Email, Internet

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

• Organizational and time management skills

• Ability to work under general direction and in a team environment

• Post-secondary education in a related field (i.e. history or museology)

• Knowledge of collections management and exhibition planning for museums is an asset



Duties:

• Develop a program strategy.

• Work with volunteers to obtain source materials, documents and images.

• Conduct related research and organize information into a binder.

• Network with local organizations and members of the community.
