City of Estevan Information

The Estevan area is rich in energy resources and has a substantial history of trade and industry. Agriculture is one of the area’s main industries, our farms and ranches produce wheat, oil seeds, mustard and livestock. Estevan is a coal-mining centre that has large open-pit mines just minutes from the City owned and operated by Westmoreland Coal Company. Coal is converted to energy in two huge power plants, the Boundary Dam Power Station and the Shand Power Station. The plants, owned and operated by the Saskatchewan Power Corporation, supply the majority of Saskatchewan’s electricity needs. Over six thousand oil wells are located within 160 km radius of Estevan. Most wells are owned and serviced by companies located in Estevan and therefore oil and gas exploration and extraction have a great impact on the local economy. Many of the residents of Estevan and area are employed by the coal, oil, gas and power industries.

The population of Estevan is approximately 13,000 people many more living on farms and neighbouring towns and villages surrounding the City. As a large service-centre for these surrounding populations, Estevan has many amenities of a larger centre. Sport culture and recreational services include a large Leisure Centre (complete with a 25 meter pool, water slide, hockey and curling rink), two golf courses, a bike path system, ball diamonds, parks, outdoor “splash pools”, a library, an art gallery a theater and two museums. The summer Estevan’s most active time of year with many events, parades, and travelling fairs.

Estevan is located approximately 15 minutes to the United States border. Large cities nearby include Saskatchewan’s Capital, Regina (2 hour drive from Estevan) and Minot, North Dakota (2 hour drive from Estevan).
